TOURNAMENT ETIQUETTE

As shops are where many tournaments take place, it will be god to keep in mind some of the dos and don’ts to observe when your players are participating. No matter the sport or game, their is a code of ethics and sportsmanship that dictate a set of behaviors so everyone can enjoy the event. Trading card games are no different. Players will not want to be treated with disrespect by opponents, so they themselves shouldn’t be disrespectful.

Here’s a few pointers and tips you can post for your players, just so everyone knows.

  • Greetings - Start the game off right. Players should greet one another, maybe make small talk, and keep a friendly vibe. This can help both sides maintain a positive outlook throughout the match, regardless of the outcome.

  • Players can allow their opponent to cut or shuffle decks before the start of the game (Optional) - This is a simple act of courtesy that most veteran TCG players are aware of, but newer players might not know. It gives the opponent a chance to ensure the other parties’ deck is randomized. It can also alleviate fears of deck manipulation. If players are not comfortable with opponents shuffling their deck, you can also invite them to cut it. Or, players can ask a referee to shuffle/cut the deck. Be careful when shuffling/cutting decks as well. Take care of your opponents belongings, avoiding damage to cards and sleeves where you can.

  • Clearly announce actions - Never assume opponents (even veterans) understand all the effects of a card, or the actions of the other player during their turn. When effects are used or go into effect, players should declare its use clearly, then explain its effect if they need to. Players should also announce the end of their turns clearly, so opponents can begin their turn without wasting time.

  • Always ask permission before touching an opponent’s cards - An opponent’s deck is their belongings, and its just polite to ask before touching their cards. Player’s can only check an opponent’s cards in a public zone. If players do not wish an opponent to touch their cards, it is polite for the owner to hold the card in a position for an opponent to read it clearly.

  • Try not to make unnecessary noise or distract an opponent - Firstly, during Grand Tournament’s it is not allowed to communicate with any spectators in the vicinity. Shop tournaments will have their own rules regarding this depending on tournament level. Everyone needs time to think about their moves. Grand Tournament players are allowed 60 seconds from the beginning of their turn to complete their turn. Player’s should allow their opponent to have that time to think without making unnecessary noise from card movement, shuffling, humming, singing, etc.

  • Offer your opponent a handshake at the end of the match - Regardless of the outcome of a match, player’s should offer a handshake and a simple “Good game” or “GG” for a match well played.
